Telling Our Story
Tyco Unit Based at Carbon-Neutral Industrial Estate
Tyco’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact is on clear display in Queensland, Australia.
Tyco's flow control business in the Asia Pacific region has an office at the Mitchell Enviro Industrial Estate, which is located at Stapylton in southeast Queensland.
"As the first carbon-neutral industrial estate in Australia, the site provides a very conducive work environment for us," says Ian Sainsbury, general manager at Flow Control. "With its natural surroundings and greenery, it complements our business perfectly. We specialize in modular water storage tanks, so we are all about protecting our water resources and caring for the environment."
The Tank division specializes in engineered modular steel tanks designed for community drinking water, wastewater and effluent storage, fire systems, power stations, mining sites and industrial water storage. The large tanks have a capacity of up to 25 megaliters (6.6 million gallons) and are marketed throughout Australia and in other countries.
The estate boasts a long list of sustainable features, from using only environmentally-responsible construction materials to collecting and treating rainwater on-site to provide potable drinking water. Runoff from the roads and parking lots is stored in underground tanks and used for irrigation.
Pumps, street lighting and security systems are powered by a grid-connected solar system. All warehouses have energy-efficient lighting. Roof and walls are insulated to maintain comfortable working temperatures, eliminating the need for artificial heating and cooling.
The site is surrounded by trees and native plants and includes a large lake.
For Sainsbury, the Mitchell Enviro Industrial Estate is a win-win situation. The company is protecting the environment while saving money on energy, water and other costs. In addition, customers are praising Tyco's decision to be part of the Mitchell facility.
“We have a lot of customers who visit the site," explains Sainsbury. "They are astounded at what they see. They walk away and think, 'Wow, you could have chosen any industrial site, but you chose this one.' It says a lot for the company."
An Eco Display Center at the estate, which opened to the public in July 2010, will provide a place where eco-conscious companies, organizations, government and educational institutions can share information about their "green" products and services in an exhibition-like atmosphere. At the same time, the Eco Display Center will educate visitors about sustainability, the environment, renewable energies and climate change solutions.
Tyco has initiated a companywide environmental program called Vital World. The goal of the program is to reduce Tyco greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water consumption by 25 percent over the next five years.
