Environment
A significant part of Tyco’s global commitment to a healthier environment is to keep our water and environments clean, and deliver our most vital element to people in the developing world. Partner organizations such as Action Against Hunger, work with Tyco to provide clean water as part of humanitarian relief efforts. Others, such as Water for People, are directly involved in providing sustainable water supplies in developing countries. The Nature Conservancy and Earthwatch Institute are capable partners bringing value to the cause through research, education and citizen involvement in conservation programs.
Key Programs:
Water Relief for Haiti
Action Against Hunger (AAH) is a pivotal Tyco partner in providing clean water to victims of the Haiti earthquake. Tyco’s funding enabled AAH to establish water stations that have effectively served 6,000 people over a sustained period following the earthquake. AAH has been working in the country since 1985 with a staff primarily comprised of local residents. They have a long-term interest in Haiti, and will be involved in the protracted effort to rebuild and recover, including establishment of water and sanitation systems. On the ground at the moment the quake struck, AAH responded with shipments of water and other supplies, and worked with other organizations to establish clean water points and sanitation facilities.
Securing a Clean Water Supply in Kenya
Tyco has a three-year commitment to support Earthwatch International’s efforts to provide clean water and sanitation in the Samburu region of Kenya. The project is rehabilitating three existing dams, and installing rain harvesting tanks for schools, allowing access to safe water and better health for 1,500 households. Dams are the major source of water within Samburu communities. The majority of these dams were in extremely poor condition -- the surface water contaminated with parasites and other disease agents. The dams are now filtering contaminated water, providing clean water for both humans and livestock, and helping to reduce child mortality rates. The project is easing human-wildlife conflicts as the water used for livestock is also available to wildlife.
Increasing Access to Sanitation and Clean Drinking Water
Tyco supported the work of Water for People in communities in Honduras for several years, providing safe water and sanitation facilities to more than 1300 people, increasing water coverage from 50% to 55% and sanitation coverage from 37% to 42%. Water for People worked with local partners to help thousands of people gain access to adequate sanitation. In addition to improvements in five rural communities, Water For People helped the municipality of San Antonio to implement an urban water project. This project helped nearly 7,000 people living in the municipal capitol of San Antonio de Cortez gain access to clean water.
Preservation Plan for the Murray-Darling Basin
The Murray-Darling Basin, which supplies drinking water to millions of Australians, water for agriculture, industry and natural habitat that, is in crisis from overuse coupled with unprecedented drought. Decades of intensive agriculture combined with growing industrial and drinking water demands have taken a toll on the basin’s essential habitats, natural water flows and water quality. Erosion, habitat destruction, changes to natural flood patterns and introduction of invasive species affect significant parts of the landscape. With support from Tyco, The Nature Conservancy’s Australia program is completing a business plan for the whole Murray-Darling River Basin and scaling up the Conservancy’s freshwater conservation across this globally important river basin.
